Please tell us a bit about yourself
I am a Burlesque dancer/ cabaret performer and I have a bachelor’s degree in lingerie design!
How did you get to doing this role?
I began at Proud Cabaret as a waitress to see me through uni. We wore corsets & lingerie and dance on the bar (think ‘coyote ugly’). I used to be so shy and hide in the toilet when the dance songs came on… Admiring the performers from afar. Then I slowly became more involved in events and parties where I advertised myself as a bit of a performer and put together little dances and group choreo, definitely bent the truth a few times just to be given a chance to get on stage. I worked at a few other cabaret venues and came full circle back to Proud where I auditioned and have now got a residency here across our 3 venues every weekend.
You are hosting a workshop on Burlesque. Why did you decide to do this event?
I was so nervous and put-down psychologically because I am not and never have been a “trained dancer”. I never studied dance, not technically brilliant, not extremely bendy or anything. I just want to spread the word that a performance is down to so much more. I have amazing feedback on shows because of my movements, energy, music etc. No one really gives a toss if you miss a step or a high kick – they want to be entertained!
What was your inspiration behind the event?
My inspiration came from having this exact conversation about not being a dancer but being as good as the other performers with my friends and my mum. Shaking off any anxieties about how deserving I was or was not. Confidence takes time and every show I grow a little bit. I wanted to give this gift to other women.
Can you give us a sneak peak into what to expect at this event?
Yes! It will be focussing on our best-body-bits, how to use them to our advantage, how to make movements sexy and how to remove items of clothing seductively!
What would you like women to get out of this event?
Confidence. Totally loving our bodies and showing them off to the world!
Finally, your one piece of advice for women on their sexuality?
Sexuality isn’t a checklist on emotions. If you have attractions that change, that’s fine. That’s normal. We like what we like and no one can ever explain or determine that! Too many men in my life have felt ‘confused’ as they say, when they discover I’m bisexual. The most infuriating part about that is the notion we have to pick a side or we have to pick one type. Love is love and it can’t be boxed!

About FIERCE Skills with Jessicats Burlesque for Body Confidence
Ever thought you don’t have the body (or the confidence) for burlesque? Think again. Join us for a practical, beginners workshop in burlesque where you’ll discover moves that celebrate all your favourite parts of your body to create a routine that makes you look and feel just fabulous.
Professional Burlesque dancer Jessica Cats built her dance career from scratch, with no formal dance training. Refusing to let herself be intimidated by the trained ballet dancers performing alongside her, she learned to concentrate on the moves that suited her best. With a bachelor’s degree in lingerie design, Jessica taught herself to focus on angles and costumes as she built routines and a style of her own.
Now you can learn to do the same: in this workshop, you’ll learn techniques and moves that boost your body confidence, empowering you to look and feel in control in a fun and supportive group setting.
